0. Introduction
Welcome to "The Hitch-Hiker's Guide to AGLAMI", aka the
alt.games.lucas-arts.monkey-island FAQ. If anyone remembers, this
document is to be posted roughly at the beginning of every month on
alt.games.lucas-arts.monkey-island, for 'newbies' to the group to
read. This is the first "Orin" revison of Pixel's approximate sixth
revision of the document.
(Confused yet? No? Dang, must try harder...)
The original "Pixel" version of this FAQ can be found on
www.lukewhitmore.com/aglami (also have a look at section 5 in this
guide). As new games appear, or people suggest improvements, or we see
a need to add new guidelines or questions to the FAQ, it will be
updated (in reality this also means whenever we remember!) Please,
take note of the guidelines and have fun on the strange island that we
call AGLAMI!

0.b. About the Author
This FAQ was originally composed by Pixel, using various bits of older
FAQs, his vast immortal brain and of course aided by the Great
Aglamian Consciousness (GAC), where he likes to mention Luke specially
for spell checking it. For more information about the entity called
Pixel refer to the RRRRR (see section 2.b. & 2.c.) or go here:
www.lukewhitmore.com/aglami/pixel
It has since been edited and updated by Orin, mainly because Pixel has
less and less time for such things since he embarked on his inspired
campaign to enslave mankind. For more on Orin, head to AGLAMI (the
newsgroup, not the website) and read some of his posts. That should be
all you need for the nightmares to begin.

0.d. Where to get this Document
This Document is posted roughly at the beginning of every month on
alt.games.lucas-arts.monkey-island
Or you can contact me online via email. But then again, the only way
you'd know this is through reading this FAQ, which implies you already
know how to get it. Fnarr... brain ache...
It starts...
==================================================
1. alt.games.lucas.arts.monkey-island
Welcome! This is a newsgroup for fans of the popular Monkey Island
series from Lucas Arts, and anyone who enjoys these games can post
here.
(Actually, we welcome posts from anybody at the moment, providing
they stick to the rules and have an open mind. Reinder keeps eating
the slower newbies.)
The group was created in February 1998 along with a bunch of other
alt.games.lucas-arts groups and we are one of the last ones standing.
Yeah baby! AGLAMI is a busy newsgroup, averaging 80-100 new posts a
day. The main language of the group is English, so please, if
possible, post in this language. If you can't speak or read English
this FAQ will be useless to you, making the very fact that I am still
typing this sentance equally pointless. Besides English most
(European) languages are supported (eg. Dutch, German, Danish,
Swedish, etc.) The currency of AGLAMI is the wooden nickel. We have
staunchly resited all attenmpts to convert to the Euro.
1.a. Getting started...
To read and post to a newsgroup you need some sort of newsreader. This
can be a web-based thing such as GoogleGroups, or a home-based
program like Agent or Gravity (or, though discouraged, Outlook
Express). You need to set your newsreader to a newsserver and then
subscribe to the newsgroup. You can then post (send a message) at
will.
GoogleGroups: http://groups.google.com
Agent: www.forteinc.com
Gravity: http://microplanet.com
A good Newsserver: news.cis.dfn.de (apply at www.cis.dfn.de first)
A note on Outlook Express: www.okinfoweb.com/moe/bugs/bugs_047.htm
1.b. Netiquette
As with most things in life there is a code of practice that is
generally used on the internet. These are some things that you might
like to consider before posting. This might save you being flamed.
Before you make your first post, it's usually wise to lurk (read
without posting) for a few days until you get the feel of the group.
Furthermore, here are some points of notice.
Do not top-post! By this I mean put your replies to posts underneath
the quoted text rather than above it. This makes the conversation
easier to read and follow. There is no discussion about this, this is
the _number one_ rule. For more information read Luke's Top-Posting
FAQ at www.lukewhitmore.com/aglami/tfaq.html
Don't post in HTML, as some people's newsreaders might not support
HTML and thus will download a message full of crap. Also, it takes
longer to download and isn't really necessary anyway. HTML can be
turned off in Outlook Express by going to Tools -> Options -> Send
and setting News Sending Format to Plain Text.
Trim your quotes! It makes it conversations easier to read and makes
message sizes smaller.
Use a sig separator. Doing this enables some newsreaders to
automatically detect signatures and cut them out so they are not
included in the reply. A sig separator is simply two dashes followed
by a space, placed as the first line of your signature. (Outlookers go
here: www.okinfoweb.com/moe/bugs/bugs_047.htm)
Don't post binary file attachments!! Oooo, this is liable to get you
killed! If there is a file you want to share with everyone, upload it
somewhere and post the URL, or post it to a group such as
alt.binaries.games.lucas-arts, if relevant.
If applicable, use TAGS (see section 1.c)
For the love of Hummel, don't complain about Off Topicness (see
section 1.c)!!
Do feel free to post almost anything - questions, opinions, humour,
speculation etc.
And finally...
Don't flame (verbally abuse) the regulars. AGLAMI regulars are like a
pack of wolves; we'll rip you to shreds. Besides, we flame better than
you do. ^_^
And don't try to troll, it is most likely not going to work because of
the nature of Aglami. Either you shall get bored very soon or you will
be assimilated into the Great Aglamian Consciousness (GAC).
1.c. Off Topicness
You might as well get used to this really quick. This newsgroup is
being kept alive by a group of regulars (people who post in a group a
lot) who call themselves Aglamians (see section 2). But these
so-called Aglamians do create an enormous amount of Off Topic (posts
that have nothing directly to do with Monkey Island). Before you start
complaining about this (as people do from time to time), see the
Aglamian point of view to this.
There is only so much to say about the Monkey Island games, and most
of it has already been said. They are adventure games, you can't
make extra levels for them, you can't customize them. In order for the
group to actually have any traffic, we need off topicness too. Bear
in mind that if there was no traffic, there'd be no regulars and
no-one here to answer your technical questions. If however you do wish
to discuss Monkey Island, or have a technical problem, then do feel
free to start a thread and people will join in. This is also a good
place to get hints, in that we can tell you exactly what you need to
know, and you will not have to read a walkthru and risk spoiling other
parts of the game.
THEORY: To accommodate the posters (people who post) who only want to
read On Topic posts (posts concerning Monkey Island) Aglami uses the
Off Topic tag, which is often added to the subject-line of an Off
Topic post. This is what the Off Topic tag looks like:
[OT]
Amazing, isn't it?
REALITY: This tag is frequently forgotten by the regulars. In fact,
it's probably easier for you to mark posts as [ON TOPIC] to
distinguish them fromour inane ramblings. Don't worry, the regulars
always ALWAYS respond to on topic posts. If you need help or advice,
please please post.
[TEOG]
REALITY: This one never, ever, ever gets used. Funnily enough, being
regulars of a group largely concered with the adventures of cartoon
pirateswe very rarely talk about religeon, etc. But feel free to do so
if you wish.
Please be so kind as to apply these tags where you can. This improves
general happiness, pleases Pixel greatly and causes less deaths.

2. Aglami
Turn Back! Darkness will envelop you! Aglami will take you and never
let you go ever again! - Just a selection of phrases tossed at newbie
buccaneers. To learn more about the phenomenon of Aglami read on.
2.a. What is Aglami?
This newsgroup _IS_ Aglami. All Aglami really stands for is
alt.games.lucas-arts.monkey-island. It's an abbreviation, or acronym,
or whatever, you see? But things are a bit more complicated now.
Aglami is also the community of posters who visit the newsgroup on a
regular basis. This group consists of an assortment of lunatics
whose brains have been permanently damaged by an overdose of
off topic posts and mindless dribble about sponge darts and escaping
voices. I myself am one of these lunatics and proud of it! They are
usually very amiable and decapitate one another in a friendly sort
of easy-going way on an almost daily basis. They are all MI fanatics
and a veritable goldmine of information about the Famous Foursome.
2.b. Who is Who
We're a multinational melee of madmen and women, hailing from all
around the globe, from Europe to Australia to the USA. Most of us
are Monkey Island fans, as you might expect. We're a pretty friendly
bunch, and any violence you may encounter is usually all in good
fun. We make up one side of what we (well, Vigilante) like to call
"Monkey World" - the Monkey Island fan community, the other side
being the people who frequent the #monkey-island chat channel and
those involved with www.scummbar.com and www.mixnmojo.com. We're
the less serious guys.
Interestingly, several of Aglami's earlier regulars have defected to
the other side, because they didn't like the off topicness. Wusses.
For more information about regulars past and present you should
consult the RRRRR by the Hummel. This is posted to Aglami and can also
be read at www.lukewhitmore.com/aglami/rrrrr.html
But don't expect too much, since he never has time to update it, being
the AGLAMI equivalent of Uncle Travelling Matt. At least the Fraggles
got postcards.
2.c. What is What
Becoming a Regular: All real respectable regulars have done the Aglami
Trials (or were smart and got here before the trials were
invented). So the fastest way to become a regular is to stand up
and scream that you want trials. This will probably cause a lot of
commotion since the last trials were handed out like one or two
years ago, because of the general laziness of the regulars.
Looking at it this way, the best way to become a regular is to
just start posting on a regular (duh) basis.
Hierarchy: On the subject of Hierarchy, Pixel's original FAQ ran
thusly:
"Aglami is basically an Anarchy, but an Anarchy in restraints. We are
governed by these people, moving from the most powerful down: Reinder,
Tracy, Dirk, Vigilante, Luke, Pixel. Reinder is our mighty chosen
Dictator and Tracy just below him as Vice-Dictator and APF-constable
(where APF is Aglami Police Force).
Dirk is our other APF-constable and Vigilante (Mike Ball) is our
self-appointed vigilante (duh). Luke is the evil webmaster and
physical and financial owner of Aglamidotcom, which gives him a lot of
power. He is also, like me, member of the Special Anti Karaoke Squad
(SAKS), which is a section of the APF which currently resides in
slumber mode."
In truth, we very rarely see Luke these days (he's kinda like the
AGLAMI version of bigfoot), Dirk hasn't been around for ages, and
Vigilante's too fluffy to be a stormtrooper. And since there is no
such thing as "an Anarchy in restraints" (this being an oxymoron), I
hereby dub AGALMI a propery anarchic society. However, since Reinder,
Tracy, Pixel et al. have been part of the group since the year dot
(unlike me: I buggered off for a couple of years then came back)
they've earned respect. You'd be foolish to piss them off.
Pixel's FAQ also says: "In day to day business, your status can be
derived from the amount of time you've been in Aglami, the amount of
posts you post, the size of your knowledge and, more importantly, the
size of your mouth."
Sadly, this is true. ^_^
RRRRR: This stands for "Reinder's Regular list of Regular Regulars
that visit Aglami Regularly", a document that is composed from
time to time by mighty pirate Reinder Hummel. It contains lots of
juicy information about the current Aglami Regulars and useful
statistics on dead (former) regulars. It can be found posted in
Aglami, and can also be read here:
www.lukewhitmore.com/aglami/rrrrr.html
Intergroupness: Lots of regulars come from like minded newsgroups,
which from time to time causes threads running in two or more
groups. This phenomenon called crossposting can be very enjoyable,
since you meet lots of new friends and interesting newsgroups you
never dreamed of existing. But not all newsgroups appreciate us
crossposting to them, so we tend to avoid them (well, most of the
time anyway). Some groups to which crossposting takes place on a
frequent basis are the Castle (alt.castlenet), AFSJJBDDD
(alt.fan.starwars.jar-jar-binks.die.die.die), where the first one
is very respectable and the second one absolutely isn't!
*sticks out tongue at AFSJJBDDD*
Fanfics: Fanfics (fan fiction) arise from time to time in Aglami.
Aglami Fanfics usually contain a mix of Monkey Island and the
newsgroup's people and events, and are always stuffed with lots of
in-jokes. Everyone can write a fanfic, and you can collaborate with
other regulars or even posters from other newsgroups, or write one
all by yourself. Most fanfics eventually end up at
www.lukewhitmore.com/aglami/fanfics.html
In-Jokes: In-Jokes are obscure jokes only understood by certain
groups of people. These can be for example be jokes related to
LA/MI-games ("I'm selling these fine leather jackets") or have
their origin in Aglami or some other obscure place ("Freudian Spin
Wheel", "The Immortal Elephant" and "[1]"). It's generally "not
done" to explain in-jokes, so I won't either, instead giving you a
bit of Luke's musing on a in-jokes explanation page:
"I was going to make one, with even .wavs of where the in-jokes
came from if they were a pop-culture thing like the Simpsons,
but if everyone knew about the in-jokes they wouldn't be in-jokes
any more, hence the page would have to be deleted, and then
they'd become in-jokes again, so I could remake the page, but
then they'd stop being in-jokes, so I'd have to delete it, and,
well, you can see my dilemma here, you've become your own
grandfather."
2.d. 'Do's and 'Don't's
DON'T EVER take it all TOO seriously!
DO ask about Monkey Island
DON'T start talking about religion when John Ievins is near
DON'T call Reinder "Reindeer" (not to his face at least)
DO ask for advice on _anything_ when in doubt
DON'T EVER EVER EVER top-post.
DON'T ever ask Kasper about this friendly ghost
DO only use Sponge Darts, not real ones.
DON'T type in capitals unless you really really want too
DON'T EVER ask Pixel about: Tents, Trains and Jimmyman
DO ask Kasper for technical help
AND DO NOT EVER call Pixel cute.
2.e. Peripherals
Aglami is not just on Usenet anymore, it has infected other systems.
And Aglami is spreading faster as the eye can catch.
WWW: Yes, we do indeed have our very own place on the World Wide Web.
The first ever Aglami-related website was made by me, Pixel, and can
be found here: www.crapstack.50megs.com/aglami/website/index.htm
However, the real official website is at www.lukewhitmore.com/aglami
(natch).
This frightful virtual tome is maintained by the evil Luke T.
Whitmore, who updates whenever he gains the upper hand in the
battle against laziness and the odd computer problem. There's a
lot of interesting stuff up there, including pictures of the
regulars, stuff wot came out our heads and we wrote (fanfics, songs,
RRRRRs and FAQs) and much, much more.
Many Aglamians have their own sites too of course. A index of them
can be found here: www.lukewhitmore.com/aglami/data.html
IRC: In another dimension, neighbouring the Usenet universe, lurks
an phenomenon know as Internet Relay Chat. Consisting of several
networks of interconnected servers, here can be instantly talked
to hundreds of people, inhabiting small segments called channels.
Aglami too got sucked in here, through a rift torn by Vigilante
(iirc). We have a channel on the Slashnet system, and many an
Aglamian spends too much time in #aglami. To access the IRC
dimension, it is recommended to download the program mIRC
(www.mirc.com), as this is clearly one of the better IRC-programs
around (Windows only). For a list of other IRC-clients have a look
here: www.valinor.sorcery.net/clients. Check here for a quick mIRC
start up guide: www.warande.uu.nl/~pixel/aglami/irchelp.htm
ICQ: Another popular form of communication is the real-time messaging
program ICQ (www.icq.com). With this program you can instantly see
if people you know are online and send them short personal
messages. A lot of the regulars use ICQ and this is thus a fitting
way to get to know your aglamian friends on a more personal note.
A list of contact numbers can be found at
www.lukewhitmore.com/aglami/data.html
Besides these more stable methods of contact, there is a habit of
jumping from one multi-player game to another. Previous examples of
such games are been Graal (www.graalonline.com), Tetrinet
(www.tetrinet.org) and Continuum (www.sscontinuum.com). To see
what's the current game of choice, check the newsgroup.
==================================================>
3. Monkey Island FAQ
Well, in the end this is a newsgroup about Monkey Island, and as we
regulars are somewhat bad at remembering links (except for Kasper of
course) and the such, here's a Monkey Island Frequently Asked
Questions.
3.a. Getting the Game
Q: How many MI games have there been?
A: There have been four games in the series. In chronological order:
-Secret of Monkey Island (also shortened to SoMI or MI1)
-Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge (usually known as MI2)
-Curse of Monkey Island (CMI, CoMI or MI3)
-Escape From Monkey Island (EMI, EfMI or MI4)
The first three are 2D point 'n click graphical adventures.
Escape from Monkey Island is different in that you do not use
the mouse at all, and everything is 3D a la Grim Fandango.
The games have been released for different formats: all four are
available on the PC, the first two on the Macintosh and Amiga,
and EMI has been released for the Playstation 2.
Q: How can I get the Monkey Island games?
A: Here I refer you to:
Guide how to buy the Monkey Island games if you only have a bag
of wooden nickels and a sword
by
Salty Pirate ervaqre
---------------------------
1. I live in the USA or Canada
That's easy. Buy them at the online Lucas Arts store
www.lucasarts.com
2. I'm not sure if I live in the USA or Canada
Well, that's not so easy...
There are several companies that distribute the games in
other countries than the USA or Canada. On the LA homepage
you'll find a list of companies and countries. Search your
country and ask at a local store to order the game at the
company mentioned on the list.
Also you might try to order it here:
www.gamespot.com/gamebuyer
www.reserve.co.uk
www.ebay.co.uk
www.gameplay.com
www.gamezone.co.uk
www.amazon.com
I'm sure Ebay is bound to have a copy.
Eh? What's that? You're a scabby bandit and you don't *want* to
pay money for these games? Well, if it's the last two games you
want, we can't help you. Go buy them. But as for the first two...
after some trouble with a man called Bruni, at Activision, we
decided to provide them if asked for... So ask if you want them.
Q: I've "lost" my code wheel. Can somebody send me an image of the
wheel?
A: Nope. Not only would it be a bit tricky to scan the thing,
verybody is too lazy to do it. If you ask nicely in the
newsgroup, somebody will point you to a place where you can get
a cracked version of the game (SoMI and MI2 only)
Q: One of my game disks is corrupted. Can you e-mail the files to me?
A: No way! Some of those files are way too big! Hmmm, but if you ask
nicely, somebody might put the file temporally online on his
webspace.
Q: Is there going to be a Monkey Island 5?
A: No-one knows for sure yet. There is some evidence, though - The
Voodoo Lady says she has a five-game contract. And bear in mind
also that Lucas Arts originally denied that there was ever going
to be a number three or four... The final word, however, is
likely to come from Simon Jeffery, the LEC President. And what
the man has said is that if EMI sold well, then there will
likely be an MI5. And it seems to be selling well, as Sean found
him saying in a interview on MixnMojo "At some point in the
future, there will undoubtedly be more Monkey Island games. No
doubt about that." Watch this space for his opinion on which
point in the future this shall be.
3.b. Stuck?
Q: I'm a pathetic wimp. I want to download the full walkthrough
solution to one of the Monkey Island games, and complete it in a
day. Where can I get such walkthroughs?
A: The best thing to do would be to post your question to the group.
That way we can give you subtle hints and you don't risk
spoiling other parts of the game by looking at a walkthru.
That's if you trust us. If you don't....
I used to run a website chock full of walkthrough goodness called
Island-X, which is sadly out of action due to problems with my ISP. It
will be back soon. In the meantime (especially since the fall of the
mighty SCUMM Bar... sniff... (wise person), then a Google search for
"Monkey Island Walkthrough" always yeids positive results. Another
alternative would be to use a Universal Hints System (UHS) hints
file. This gives you progressive hints for particular puzzles
you are stuck on. Check it out at: www.uhs-hints.com
Q. I am unable to win the sword fight with the Swordmaster/
Rottingham. How do I win?
A. Firstly, you must collect as many witty replies as possible from
the other pirates. To do this, simply give them an insult - if
they reply with the correct answer, it will be added to your
list. Then when you confront the Swordmaster/Rottingham, just
use the answer which makes the most sense.
Q: What _IS_ the secret of Monkey Island?
A: Nobody knows except for Ron Gilbert, the creator of SoMI and MI2.
In a recent chat, he announced that if you look carefully at the
first two games, you can find out the secret - apparently, 'a
lot of the jokes aren't really jokes...'.
3.c. Technical
Q: Hi I've got windows 2000 and of course monkey island three. The
problem is simple, it doesn't work!!! Does anyone know or had
similar problems?
A: Check out www.ntcompatible.com/m.htm and scroll down to Monkey
Island.
Q: I'm having problems with Escape From Monkey Island. Help me, you
stupid bastards, it's what you're here for!
A: read the "Escape From Monkey Island Technical Support", by Kasper
Aae here: www.lukewhitmore.com/aglami/efaq.html

5. History
This is actually not the first document of its kind, or the second
or third... but the seventh. The first FAQ was created by Huz in early
1999, and the second one, a combination FAQ for this newsgroup and
the #monkey-island chat channel, appeared shortly after, written by
Michael Smith. After a lapse of several months where - shock
horror - no such document was posted, yet another FAQ was created by
Simon Reid, in September 1999. And the story doesn't end here. Oh
no. All these people disappeared, and the fourth holy document
appeared, also the longest-used one, the mighty FAQAA, penned by one
Sean Geggie. Due to various problems, Sean was unable to post for a
long time. And much had happened which might warrant the authorship
of a new FAQ, so Michael Ball took on the authorship. But alas, Mike
has school and school means less internet, and less internet means
no time for a FAQ. Then PIxel had a go, doing an admirable job. And
finally,
I grabbed hold of Pixel's and had a bit of an edit. So here this one
is. Written by me, Orin... well,
mostly copy-pasted from previous ones. So there you have it.
Interesting... all the previous FAQ authors
have disappeared... could it be that there is a curse on us? Well, we
can only hope.
